The Senior Doorknocking Program, a partnership between Reynoldstown Civic Improvement League, Housing Justice League (HJL) and Councilmember District 5, Liliana Bakhtiari, aims to support long-term homeowners and renters by fostering housing stability and preventing displacement. Recognizing that housing security is tied to broader issues like economic justice, health, and environmental safety, the program focuses on building relationships within the community, gathering input from residents, and advocating for housing dignity. By engaging with homeowners and tenants, HJL and Reynoldstown seek to empower residents through organizing, education, and direct action to preserve the neighborhood and fight for just housing policies.

Program

  • Collaborate with Reynoldstown leadership and residents to launch an informational session introducing the partnership between HJL and the community, preparing for anti-displacement and neighborhood retention efforts.

  • Attend community meetings and events to build relationships, gather insights, and map the community for targeted engagement.

  • Create and distribute a survey informed by neighbors’ concerns to collect data that will support anti-displacement strategies.

  • HJL canvassers will door-knock in the neighborhood twice a week for three hours, providing weekly reports to Reynoldstown to guide ongoing efforts.

GOALS

  • Protect seniors from predatory developers by offering education and resources to safeguard their homes.

  • Provide direct assistance to seniors, helping them navigate housing challenges and access legal support.

  • Empower long-term homeowners with tools to prevent displacement and maintain housing stability.

  • Strengthen community connections by building support networks that prioritize senior housing rights and retention.
